2. What UnPeel is
You photograph the label of a product. The app reads the text on your phone, and our server works out the ingredient list and what the product is: its category, and how it is used (eaten, put on skin, inhaled, and so on). The app then shows an informational analysis: findings about the ingredients, alerts, regulatory notes and a score.
UnPeel covers food, drinks, oils and fats, basic commodities, food supplements, infant food, pet food, cosmetics (rinse-off and leave-on), oral care, fragrance sprays, household products, and other non-food products.
UnPeel also offers:
- Browse: a shared index of products, built from the product-level results of all users' successful scans. It never shows who scanned a product. See section 14 and our Privacy Policy.
- Company records: public records about the company that makes a product, such as recalls or enforcement actions, taken from official sources.
UnPeel is an information tool. It is not:
- medical, nutritional, veterinary or other professional advice;
- a medical device under Regulation (EU) 2017/745. It is not intended to diagnose, prevent, monitor, predict, treat or relieve any disease;
- a substitute for reading the physical label;
- an official or certified assessment of any product.
When the app mentions bodies such as EFSA, the WHO or national regulators, it describes public information about ingredients. Those bodies have not reviewed, approved or endorsed UnPeel.
3. Functionality and compatibility
- UnPeel is available for Android 7.0 or later, through Google Play. It is not yet available for iOS. When it is, we will add the terms that apply to Apple's App Store.
- You need an internet connection to sign in and to analyse a label.
- You need a camera to photograph labels. You can also choose an existing photo from your gallery.
- The app and these Terms are in English.
4. Who can use UnPeel, and your account
- You must be at least 16 years old. You confirm this when you sign up.
- Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep it up to date.
- Keep your password secret. You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else is using it, tell us at support@kerd.lt straight away.
- One account per person. You may not share, sell or transfer your account.
- We may limit the number of new accounts per day. If sign-up is refused for that reason, the app says so, and you can try again the next day.
5. Acceptable use
You must not:
- use UnPeel for anything unlawful;
- reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, except where the law allows it (including Art. 6 of Directive 2009/24/EC);
- scrape, bulk-download or systematically copy our ingredient catalogue, results, product index or other content;
- use bots or other automated means to access UnPeel, or use it to build a competing product or to train a machine-learning model;
- get around the weekly free scan, credits, the trial or Premium allowances, the subscription check or the ad rewards — including the provisional scan in 6.3 — or create fake ad views or rewards;
- try to access our systems or other users' data without permission, or test our security without our written consent;
- upload content that is unlawful, infringes someone's rights, or contains other people's personal data without a legal basis;
- disrupt or overload UnPeel or its infrastructure.
Photos. Photograph only product labels. Do not photograph people, identity documents or confidential material. You confirm you may upload each photo you send.
6. Scans and how they are paid for
Each analysis costs us money. Every scan is covered in exactly one of the ways below.
6.1 The weekly free scan
A new account starts with the weekly free scan and 0 credits. You get one free scan every 7 days. The 7 days run from the moment you last used it (a rolling window, not a calendar week). The app shows the date of your next free scan. An unused free scan does not carry over.
6.2 Rewarded ads and credits
Every other scan on the free tier is covered by watching a rewarded video ad to the end. One fully watched ad gives one credit, and one credit covers one scan.
- A credit is granted only after Google's servers confirm to our server that you finished the ad. The app cannot grant a credit itself.
- You can hold at most 30 credits.
- If no ad can be shown — for example because the ad network has none, an ad blocker or your network stops it, or the consent step was not completed — the scan is not covered and does not run. The app tells you why and what you can do. We do not detect or work around ad blockers.
- Credits have no money value. You cannot exchange them for money or transfer them. We may change how many credits an ad gives, the maximum balance, or whether rewarded ads are offered, under section 16.
6.3 Provisional scan when the confirmation is late
Sometimes Google's confirmation arrives later than the app can wait. The app may then run the scan provisionally. This can happen at most once in any rolling 24 hours per account, whether or not the late confirmation arrives. When the confirmation does arrive, it pays for that provisional scan instead of adding a credit.
6.4 Repeat scans
A scan costs the same whether we produce a new analysis or reuse a stored one.
6.5 Failed and cancelled scans
- If the app cannot read your photo, the photo is rejected before anything is charged.
- If a scan fails after it was charged, because of a fault on our side, we return the free scan, credit or allowance you used. This happens automatically where possible. Otherwise, write to support@kerd.lt and we will return it.
- If you cancel a scan while it is running, you get it back.
- We do not return a completed scan because you disagree with the result.
6.6 Capacity pauses
Our analysis costs have a monthly budget. When we get close to it, we may pause the weekly free scan first and then scans covered by ads. The app says so clearly when this applies. Trial and Premium scans continue. In an emergency we may pause all new analyses for a short time; results we already have stored keep working.
7. Premium
7.1 What you get
Premium is a subscription, monthly or yearly. It gives you:
- scans without ads, up to a fair-use limit of 250 scans per calendar month (counted in UTC). After that, scans in that month are covered by rewarded ads again, as on the free tier. You are never blocked. Premium is therefore not ad-free beyond the fair-use limit. The count starts again on the first day of the next month;
- Browse and search of the shared product index, with ranking filters;
- the full ingredient picker for dietary restrictions (the preset restrictions are free for everyone);
- Compare;
- scan streaks;
- all company records for a product (free users see up to 3).
7.2 Price and payment
At launch, Premium costs EUR 4.99 per month or EUR 29.99 per year, including VAT. The binding price is the one Google Play shows you before you buy, in your currency, including VAT.
Premium is sold through Google Play. Google processes the payment under its own terms, and we never receive your card or bank details. The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel it. If the price changes, Google Play tells you in advance and asks for your consent where its rules or the law require it.
7.3 Free trial
Where Google Play offers it, you can start a 3-day free trial of the monthly plan. Google allows one trial per Google account and needs a payment method on file.
- During the trial you have Premium features and up to 100 scans. After 100, further trial scans are covered by rewarded ads.
- If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the paid subscription starts and you are charged. The app shows the date of the first charge. Google Play also sends a reminder.
- If the trial ends without a subscription, your account returns to the free tier. Unused trial scans do not carry over.
7.4 Cancelling
You can cancel at any time before the next renewal in Google Play: Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → UnPeel → Cancel. In the app, Profile → Manage or cancel subscription takes you there. Premium stays active until the end of the period you paid for.
Deleting the app, or your UnPeel account, does not cancel the subscription.
8. Your right of withdrawal (EU and EEA consumers)
If you are a consumer in the EU or the EEA, you have the right to withdraw from a Premium subscription within 14 days, without giving a reason. The 14 days start on the day you subscribe or start the free trial. Premium is a digital service.
Starting straight away. When you subscribe, you ask for Premium to start immediately, within the 14 days. If you then withdraw, you pay a proportionate amount for the paid days of Premium you had until you told us you are withdrawing (Art. 14(3) of Directive 2011/83/EU). We refund the rest.
How to withdraw. Tell us clearly that you are withdrawing, before the 14 days end. You can:
- request a refund through Google Play, using Google Play's refund request for the purchase; or
- email support@kerd.lt. You can use the model form in the Annex below, but you do not have to. Send it from the email address of your UnPeel account, or tell us that address.
It is enough to send your message before the 14 days end. We confirm receipt. We then refund you, or ask Google to refund you, within 14 days of receiving your withdrawal, to the payment method you used. Withdrawing also cancels the renewal.
9. If UnPeel does not work as it should
We must supply UnPeel as described in these Terms. If it does not conform, you have the rights of Directive (EU) 2019/770 and your national consumer law: to have it brought into conformity, and in some cases to a price reduction or to end the contract. We are responsible for the conformity of Premium for the whole time you subscribe. Write to support@kerd.lt.
A result you disagree with is not, by itself, a lack of conformity: section 10 explains what results are and are not.
10. Accuracy and safety — please read all of it
10.1 Results are produced automatically and can be wrong
UnPeel uses text recognition, an AI model and our own ingredient catalogue. All three can be wrong. In particular:
- text recognition can misread, skip or invent characters or whole ingredients, especially on curved, shiny, damaged, small-print, foreign-language or badly lit labels;
- the AI can misidentify an ingredient, the product's category or how the product is used, and the result depends on that;
- our catalogue can be incomplete or out of date, and some of its entries are rated by an AI model;
- scores, verdicts, findings and alerts are our assessment using our method, not measurements, and other sources may reasonably disagree;
- recipes change, and versions of a product differ between countries.
We do not promise that a result is complete, correct, current or suitable for any purpose, beyond what consumer law requires of us.
10.2 Allergies — do not rely on UnPeel
If you have an allergy, intolerance or sensitivity, do not rely on UnPeel to decide whether a product is safe for you.
Always read the physical label and the maker's allergen information before you eat, drink or use a product. UnPeel's allergen and dietary alerts can miss an allergen that is present — because the label was misread, an ingredient is not listed, a "may contain" warning was not read, there is cross-contamination in the factory, or the recipe changed.
A missed allergen can cause serious injury or death. If in doubt, do not use the product, and ask the maker or a healthcare professional.
10.3 By kind of product
- Food, drinks and supplements. Results are general information, not advice about your diet or health. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness and medicines create risks UnPeel cannot assess. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before changing your diet or supplements, and never ignore or delay medical advice because of the app.
- Infant food. Follow the instructions on the pack and the advice of a doctor, nurse or other qualified professional. Do not choose or change an infant's food because of UnPeel.
- Cosmetics, oral care and fragrance sprays. A skin or contact allergy can come from an ingredient the app does not flag. Before using a new product, do a patch test as the pack advises, and stop using a product that irritates you. Do not swallow oral care products unless the pack says you can.
- Household products. UnPeel is not a safety data sheet. Always follow the hazard symbols, the instructions and the first-aid information on the pack. Keep such products away from children and pets.
- Pet food. Results are general information, not veterinary advice. Ask a vet about your animal's diet and health.
- Emergencies. If you suspect an allergic reaction or poisoning, call the emergency number 112 (in the EU) or your local poison centre straight away.
10.4 No endorsement
A score or alert is not a recommendation to buy or to avoid a product. A company's record in the app is taken from public sources and is shown as such. Companies that think a result is wrong can write to info@kerd.lt.
11. Liability
11.1 What we never limit
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for:
- death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
- fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
- damage caused intentionally or by gross negligence;
- anything else that the law does not allow us to limit or exclude, including under the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live.
11.2 Limits
Subject to 11.1, and as far as the law allows:
- we are not liable for loss or damage that was not foreseeable when you accepted these Terms;
- if you use UnPeel for business purposes, we are not liable for loss of profit, business or opportunity;
- we are not liable for the acts or content of third parties we do not control, such as product makers, retailers, public databases, Google Play or advertisers;
- our total liability to you under or in connection with these Terms is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for UnPeel in the 12 months before the event that gave rise to the claim, or (b) EUR 100.
11.3 Availability
We try to keep UnPeel available, but we cannot promise it will always work without interruption or errors. We may pause it for maintenance, or when a service we depend on fails. We give notice when we reasonably can. This does not reduce your rights under section 9.
12. Your content and what we may do with it
You keep ownership of your photos. You give us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to store, copy and process your photos, the text read from them and your results, for as long as needed to provide UnPeel to you: to run the analysis, keep your history and let you search it.
You also agree that, in a form that does not identify you, we may use what your scans produce for the service as a whole:
- The shared product index. The product-level result of a successful scan (product name, type, score, verdict, analysis, barcode, date) is shown to other signed-in users in Browse, search and Compare. It never includes your photo, the text read from your photo, your location or who you are. It leaves the index when you delete the scan or your account.
- Our ingredient catalogue and records. Ingredient names printed on your labels may be added to our shared ingredient catalogue, and we keep records of our AI requests and replies, which contain label text. These remain after you delete a scan or your account, without any link to you.
This licence never covers your photo or information about you as a person. We do not publish your photos, and we do not use your photos or label text for marketing. Under its API terms, our AI provider does not use data we send it to train its models.
13. Our intellectual property
The app, its design, code, ingredient catalogue, method and the UnPeel name and logo belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, under these Terms. Product names, brands and label text belong to their owners and are shown only to identify products. Data from third-party sources is used under their licences; see /legal/subprocessors. If you send us suggestions, we may use them freely.
14. How rankings work
Browse shows products from the shared product index. This is how they are ordered:
- You choose a product type (for example "yogurt"). Only product types with at least two products are listed.
- Products are ordered by their UnPeel score, highest first. If two products have the same score, the one scanned more recently comes first.
- Each product appears once. Scans with the same barcode — or, without a barcode, the same product name — count as one product, shown with its most recent scan.
- You can filter by score range.
- Search results are listed with the most recently scanned first.
- Nobody pays for a position. We do not accept payment from companies for placement, and ads are never placed in rankings.
- The index contains only products that users have scanned. A ranking shows the best of what has been scanned, not the best of everything on sale.
15. Advertising
The free tier is paid for by rewarded video ads that you choose to watch (section 6.2).
- Only Google's server-side confirmation grants a credit, and never twice for the same ad.
- We do not control the content of ads and are not responsible for the products they advertise.
- In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, we ask for your consent before ads are personalised; see our Privacy Policy. Declining does not reduce what an ad earns.
- Manipulating ads or rewards — automated viewing, emulators, faked confirmations, or abuse of the provisional scan — breaks section 5 and may lead to loss of credits and closure of the account.
16. Suspension and ending the contract
16.1 By you
You can stop using UnPeel at any time and delete your account in Profile → Delete account. How to delete your account without the app, and what is deleted, is explained at /legal/data-rights. Deleting your account does not cancel a Google Play subscription (section 7.4).
16.2 By us
We may suspend or close your account if:
- you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, including section 5;
- the law requires it; or
- we stop providing UnPeel. We then give you at least 30 days' notice where we can, and refund the unused part of any prepaid Premium period.
Where a breach can be fixed and circumstances allow, we first give you the chance to fix it. We tell you the reason. You can challenge a decision by writing to support@kerd.lt.
16.3 What continues
Sections 10, 11, 12, 13, 18 and 19 continue to apply after the contract ends.
17. Changes to UnPeel and to these Terms
We may change UnPeel and these Terms, for example because of new laws, security needs, new features or changes to services we rely on.
- Changes to the Terms. We tell you about a change at least 30 days before it takes effect, in the app or by email. When the new version takes effect, the app asks you to accept it before you continue. We do not treat simply continuing to use UnPeel as acceptance.
- If you do not accept, you may delete your account, and we refund the unused part of any prepaid Premium period, pro rata.
- Changes to the service. If we change UnPeel in a way that negatively affects your access to or use of Premium, more than minimally, you have the rights of Art. 19 of Directive (EU) 2019/770, including ending the contract free of charge.
18. Complaints, law and courts
18.1 Complaints
Write to support@kerd.lt. We confirm receipt within 2 working days and answer within 14 days.
18.2 Out-of-court dispute resolution
If we cannot settle your complaint, you can take it to the State Consumer Rights Protection Authority (Valstybinė vartotojų teisių apsaugos tarnyba, VVTAT) (https://vvtat.lrv.lt), which resolves consumer disputes out of court, free of charge. We take part in that procedure. You can also contact the consumer authority or out-of-court body of your own country.
18.3 Governing law
These Terms are governed by the law of the Republic of Lithuania. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory rules of the country where you usually live (Art. 6 of Regulation (EC) No 593/2008, Rome I).
18.4 Courts
If you are a consumer living in the EU, you can bring a claim against us in the courts of the country where you live, or in the courts of Lithuania. We can bring a claim against you only in the courts of the country where you live (Arts. 17–19 of Regulation (EU) No 1215/2012). If you are not a consumer, the courts of Lithuania have jurisdiction.
19. General
- Language. These Terms are written in English. If we provide a translation, you may rely on it.
- Privacy. How we handle personal data is explained in our separate Privacy Policy. It is information for you, not part of this contract.
- Whole agreement. These Terms, and the product information shown to you before a purchase, are the whole agreement between us about UnPeel.
- Severability. If a court finds a part of these Terms invalid or unenforceable, the rest stays in force. If you are a consumer, the invalid part simply does not apply to you.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up.
- Transfer. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms. We may transfer the contract to a company that takes over UnPeel, provided your rights are not reduced. We will tell you if we do.
- Events beyond our control. We are not responsible for a delay or failure caused by events beyond our reasonable control. This does not reduce your rights under section 9.
- Google Play. Your purchase through Google Play is also subject to Google Play's terms. Google is not a party to these Terms.
